GLOBAL PEDIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA

As a global leader in pediatric healthcare and education, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is dedicated to advancing healthcare for children around the world. While we can’t treat every child directly here in Philadelphia, one powerful way we multiply our impact is through global medical education opportunities for medical practitioners throughout the world, whether at sites around the globe or in programs for international learners here on our main campus in Philadelphia

Every year, through international observerships, we welcome more than 160 international clinicians to CHOP to learn about our care model and specialized pediatric care. We offer educational programming tailored to candidates’ clinical or administrative interests as well as their desired scope of individual and group learning. These training and education opportunities allow eligible international clinicians to observe patient care for a period typically lasting two to 12 weeks, with the longest up to six months. Observers gain an overview of CHOP’s care delivery models and clinical standards by shadowing the CHOP clinical team. Candidates often participate in rounds and conferences, and they observe leading experts delivering advanced pediatric care.

ABOUT H. JORGE BALUARTE, MD

As Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at CHOP, Dr. H. Jorge Baluarte has made a transformative impact on the field of nephrology and on CHOP. He received his undergraduate degree from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and his medical degree from Facultad de Medicina, San Fernando, both in Lima, Peru. He completed residencies in Peru and at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada; and a fellowship in pathology at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati before becoming a Pediatric Nephrology fellow, first at La Rabida Hospital for Children in Chicago and later at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Dr. Baluarte has dedicated his professional life over the last 40 years to the care of children with kidney disease — with clinical expertise and research activities focusing on chronic kidney disease, kidney transplantation, nephrotic syndrome and hypertension. Over his career, he has authored numerous scientific publications and textbook chapters, and has served as a peer reviewer in top journals. He has attended and participated in national and international conferences in Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Turkey, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In 2000, CHOP was fortunate to have him join our faculty as Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Baluarte has been a dedicated and beloved teacher, training some of the most outstanding pediatric nephrologists in the country and abroad. Many of his former nephrology fellows are leaders in the field, due in no small part to his leadership, his generous sharing of his knowledge and experience, and his love of nephrology. Just as he has shared his research and clinical experience at international conferences, his dedication to teaching has reached beyond the borders of the United States. He established a clinical observership at CHOP to provide learning opportunities in nephrology for medical students, residents, fellows and faculty from Peru.

SHARING KNOWLEDGE OF PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY FOR INTERNATIONAL IMPACT

As Dr. Baluarte will be retiring at the end of 2018, now is an opportune time to honor his innumerable contributions by creating a fund to support training and educational opportunities in pediatric nephrology. Establishing this fund in Dr. Baluarte’s name will continue his legacy of generosity as a teacher, ensuring international physicians can participate in specialized and advanced learning opportunities that enable them to better help children with kidney disease.

A gift to this fund is an investment in the future success and vitality of CHOP, and such a fund supporting international medical education is, in a true sense, a gift of sharing knowledge that elevates the entire field. We hope you will join us in celebrating Dr. Baluarte’s advancement of pediatric nephrology through the creation of the H. Jorge Baluarte, MD, International Training and Education Fund for Physicians in Pediatric Nephrology. Your gift will help honor Dr. Baluarte’s impact and open new doors for physicians from across the globe to benefit CHOP’s expertise — ultimately, helping children in need receive improved care regardless of where they call home.
