Patrick S. Pasquariello, Jr., M.D.

Affectionately known to his patients and medical students as “Dr. Pat,” Pat dedicated his entire 54-year medical career to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He began as an intern at CHOP in 1961, served as Chief Resident at CHOP in 1963-1964, and joined the faculty at CHOP in 1967.  He graduated from St. Joseph’s University with a B.S. in Biology in 1952 and from Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine with his M.D. in 1956.  During his career at CHOP, he held numerous Hospital leadership roles, including Director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education from 1983 to 2003 and Interim Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics from 1997 to 2000.

For many years Pat was the Director of CHOP’s main campus Primary Care Practice, providing primary care to children and families from the local community.  In 1989, he created the CHOP Diagnostic and Complex Care Center, a program that has served as a place of hope for families and referring pediatricians alike and that he directed until his death.  There are countless stories from families and physicians about his remarkable ability to diagnose patients with complex and unusual illnesses.  Up until his passing, he also served as Director of the Spina Bifida Program and as the general pediatric consultant for the 22Q11 Deletion Clinic and the Cranial-Facial Reconstruction Clinic, attending those clinics faithfully over many years.

Pat was the pediatrician’s pediatrician, a master clinician, recognized for his outstanding ability to both pursue the diagnosis in children with complex illnesses and at the same time provide reassurance and compassion to the patients and families to whom he dedicated his life.  He taught hundreds of medical students and residents the art of medicine with both his words and his actions, modeling true professionalism and dedication for more than 50 years.
