The Parkway Run & Walk is a 5K Run & 2K Family Fun Walk that benefits pediatric cancer research and care at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, ranked the #3 children's cancer hospital by U.S. News & World Report in 2016.
Pediatric cancer strikes 1 in 285 children, and our daughter Callie was one of them in 2004 when she was only 9 years old. Callie was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma, a smooth muscle tissue cancer, in her stomach. Her tumor was surgically removed, and thankfully, she required no further treatment. She did, however, continue to have ultrasounds, bloodwork, and exams with her oncologist for several years to make sure the tumor did not recur, and she was officially released from CHOP's Cancer Survivorship Program in June 2015. Callie completed a 10-week summer externship at Washington Hospital outside Pittsburgh, where she gained valuable on-the-job nursing experience in the Critical Care Unit, Emergency Department, and the OR. She is now a 22-year old senior nursing student at Temple University who one day hopes to be a pediatric oncology nurse at CHOP.
Callie's Crusaders was born in 2005, and we are extremely proud to be participating in our 13th Parkway Run & Walk. The fight to beat cancer continues for so many kids and their families, and they need our support. Our team has already raised over $59,000 to fund CHOP's cancer research and survivorship programs, and your contribution will make an incredible difference in the lives of children with cancer. Please join team Callie's Crusaders on Sunday, September 24th, and help us fight childhood cancer!
