On March 1, 2018 our lives were changes forever. At 5:45am I received a call from our pediatrician because Laura's blood test results came back critical and I needed to get her to the emergency room ASAP. We immediately drove to CHOP where Laura was diagnosed with High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). At the time of her diagnosis the doctor informed us that, had we not gotten her there when we did, she would have died. She spent the next month inpatient getting aggressive treatment to combat her aggressive cancer.
The first 9 month of treatment were nothing short of devastating. Lots of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, hospital admissions, spinal taps, loss of mobility, pneumonia, x-rays, MRIs, ICU admissions, therapy, etc........
Laura missed 10 months of school including her 8th grade graduation.
Now that she is in maintenance, Laura is slowly getting her strength and her life back. She still has treatment until 6/26/20, including daily oral chemo and regular spinal taps with chemo. She also gets drip chemo and high doses of steroids every cycle.
If not for the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at CHOP, Laura may not have made it. We will walk the Parkway on 9/29/19 to help CHOP make breakthroughs for all childhood cancers.
We are raising money to help fight childhood cancer and fund breakthrough research and innovative care at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Join us – together we can make a difference!
Why This Is So Important to Our Team:
Patients Need Us
Parents shouldn’t have to hear the words “your child has cancer,” but 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 20 years old.
Breakthroughs Are Upon Us Every day, CHOP’s Cancer Center team is redefining what a cancer diagnosis means for a child. The center offers the most advanced therapies available anywhere in the world, including cutting-edge clinical trials that reprogram the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. CHOP’s Center for Childhood Cancer Research is one of the most distinguished research programs in the nation.
