Welcome family and friends to the fifth annual Amanosi's 5k Victory Walk/Run for sickle cell disease, COVID-19 edition. Can you believe it’s been 5 years since we started this journey together?
Due to COVID -19 this year’s walk will be a virtual event and you can walk in your own neighborhood or outdoor venue near your house! The purpose of this walk is to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and risks posed by COVID-19 to those with chronic diseases such as SCD. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that causes crescent-shaped red blood cells to form, reducing blood and oxygen flow. SCD can cause fatigue, severe pain, organ damage, stroke, and even death.
AMANOSI'S VICTORY
Amanosi Agbugui received her bone marrow transplant in 2011 at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with a bone marrow match from her brother, Udukhomo Agbugui. Amanosi has been cured of SCD and recently completed her bachelor’s degree from West Chester University. Amanosi says, “During the long and complex bone marrow transplant process nine years ago I received moral support from the medical staff at CHOP, family, friends and the parent support group from CHOP hospital. My hope is that this walk will help to provide the kind of support I received to those who may have sickle cell disease and undergoing any form of treatment.”
THE WALK
This year’s walk is a virtual walk in your own neighborhood due to COVID-19. We will host a virtual program via Zoom at 9:00AM and then set off on our individual walk/runs. To support the Amanosi's 5k Walk/Run, you can register to participate in the 5K walk/run, organize a fundraising team, join an existing team, or simply donate to CHOP! All proceeds will benefit the COVID-19 efforts for CHOP’s Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center.
A virtual link to join the walk will be sent before the event.
